An Introduction to G Scale Model Trains
According to some model train hobbyists, the G scale train models are the best train size for both new and experienced train lovers. The biggest G scale does not automatically mean that it is the best scale among other trains, but this might just be the case with the G scale trains. The G stands for garden and such models have a ratio of 1:24 and sometimes 1.22.5 making it great for outdoor enjoyment. These trains run on one gauge track and are sights to behold owing to their heavy appearances and strength.
The most notable aspect about these model types are that model train enthusiasts can utilize landscape such as miniature shrubs, plants and bushes to improve the overall model train layout. In fact, a garden train using the 1:24 scale was erected at the Fairplex Gardens in Los Angeles is one example of using the surrounding scenery. Today, the Fairplex Garden railroad showcases 9,800 feet of railway track and eighteen miles of electrical wiring.
The early garden trains that were manufactured in Europe had a scale of 1:24. However, these versions did not reach America until the early 1920s. The real G scale trains, which are also called garden railways, were initially sold in 1968 by Ernst Paul Lehmann Petentwerk under the Lehmann Gross Bahn (LGB) brand. Later on, the company introduced the G scale trains in Europe and America such as the diesel prototypes, steam, electric, accessories and rolling stocks. Despite LGB’s pioneering production efforts, the company could not establish its presence in America until 1972 when it received publicity in an article published in “Model Railroader Magazine”.
Due to their uniqueness, these trains merit several considerations. First, the G scale model trains are easy to set up because their tracks are easier to handle and are larger compared to other model train scales. However, their sizes utilize more physical space. If G scale hobbyists intend to have permanent indoor settings, it is advisable for them to plan their needs carefully.
Another consideration worth mentioning is the fact that G scale model trains provide a perfect opportunity for the family to come together and have a good time. For instance, even young children can participate in setting up a layout for the G scale models. For instance, these kinds of model trains are perfect for personalizing the layout by including children toys such as cars and other items due to the larger scale. In addition, parents can have their children help them to make additional items such as by taking empty cans and cleaning them up and utilizing them for water towers. Similarly, the children can help by create buildings by decorating boxes of various shapes and sizes.
In summary, the G scale model trains are ideal for outdoor use and blends well with landscaping or garden settings. This particular point enables model train enthusiasts the opportunity to set up an elaborate, realistic layout that can be admired outdoors. So, the next time someone asks you about a G scale model train, be sure to share your newfound knowledge. They may even be so impressed that they’ll want to start their own G scale model train layout!
