Model Train collection is a hobby that a number of people engage in due to their aesthetic value as well as being a source of entertainment for many people. There are many manufacturers of these model trains at present where people can acquire their own model train sets. For the collectors of the old models which might not be in production at present, there are a number of shows that are organized all across the world. These shows give an opportunity for model train collectors, sellers and buyers to come together and exchange train models.

There are various companies that organize such model train shows in different places across the world. The Great Train Expo is an example of such model train event which normally takes place in the National Western Complex in Denver, Colorado. This show is the most popular American traveling model train show which serves the biggest number of states in comparison to all other shows. The show normally features model train dealers, operating model train railroads, Hanson exhibits, model train collectors, demonstrations as well as workshops among others. They also have a website www.gtexpo.com which gives details of the venue and features that are expected in all forthcoming shows across different states.

The other famous model train event is the Greenberg’s train show which is normally hosted in the Fredericksburg Expo and Conference Center located in Fredericksburg, Virginia. This show was established in the year 1976 to aid in the promotion of model train collection as well as model railroading as a hobby. This show normally features dealers selling model trains, operating model train railroads as well as hands-on demonstrations and exhibits. More information in relation to the shows can be accessed from their website www.greenbergshows.com.

The other model train show that is popular is the Medina Model Railroad Show which is hosted at the Medina County Fairgrounds of Medina Ohio. This show was initiated in the year 1980 but it was until the year 1992 when Conrad & Dowdell Prod engaged in its promotion. Ever since then, the show has grown attracting more and more participators into the event. The show boasts of over 350 displays which showcase model trains, supplies lay out and train memorabilia among others. The show has an area where small kids as well as big kids can view the working layouts. People can also watch train movies or attend the seminars.

Lastly, the National Model Railroad Association also holds conventions in different parts of the USA. This show is normally very big and lasts for an entire week. The show boasts of contests through which modelers show case their talents in construction of model trains. The setting up of layouts is also done through which people can admire or criticize the model train layouts. There are also some workshops that are organized and people acquire new skills from the more experienced skills.

More information in relation to these shows and others can be found over the internet. They are a great opportunity for many model train collectors to acquire new sets of trains or dispose off some of the old ones they have. Take sometime and visit one and get fascinated by the world of model trains.

There are many types of train sets that are in existence in the world today. There are hand-propelled types; there are ones powered by electricity. Believe it or not, there are even the steam-propelled trains. The model steam trains were more common during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

There are a number of characteristics that distinguish steam models from the modern trains available to hobbyists. The steam trains have unique parts and designs such as the boiler, the steam circuit, the running gear, the chassis as well as the firebox with a chimney on top of it. These parts are visible from the outside and along with the features help distinguish this model from other models.
Here is a brief explanation of some of the parts and features of the steam train:

The Boiler and Firebox
The model steam trains have a distinctive steam locomotive that makes use of a fire-tube boiler made out of steel. This boiler contains steam and water that is pressurized. The firebox is usually located at the boiler’s rear end with the chimney’s location being in front. The firebox is surrounded by a steel chamber that is filled with water , which produces the steam once the water is heated .

The Chassis
The locomotive frame or chassis forms the most important structure since the boiler is affixed onto it. The chassis incorporates different elements of the gears that run the model train. The train’s boiler is mounted rigidly in front of the barrel of the boiler just underneath the smoke box on the saddle. European-made model trains have the locomotives made out of plate frames. Two flat frames are placed vertically, forming the chassis with various spacers and buffer beams at either end keeping them apart. The American-made model trains have bar frames which are built-up to form a “cylinder/smokebox saddle” type of structure. There are drag beams that are integrated in between the chassis.

The Running Gear
The running gear comprises of the wheel sets, brake gear, axleboxes, the connecting rods as well as the valve gear. This assists the model train in the transmission of power to rails from pistons, enabling the model train to negotiate points and curves in addition to the irregularities on the track.

Most of these steam trains are loved for their traditional unmodified rough look; this is an additional feature that makes this train unique. This is the reason why the older models are popular among the collectors of model trains. They act as a testament to the origin of trains.

For a period of over 100 years now, the Lionel brand has become one of the most enduring brands in the model train industry. In fact, Lionel trains are so famous that they were included in the U.S. National Toy Hall of Fame, which recognizes products that are well-known, enduring, and innovative. Despite this brand recognition, many are not aware of the incredible story behind the product.

The story begins with Joshua Lionel Cohen, an American inventor and co-founder of Lionel Corporation, the company that manufactured these model trains. Cohen came from a large family and never completed his college education. However, he had the knack for inventing things at an early age. When he was just seven years old, he invented a toy wooden train with a small steam engine. Yet no one realized Cohen’s initial invention would eventually result in a model railroading empire.

In 1900, Cohen and his partner formed Lionel Corporation. Although the company was initially focused on electrical products such as fans and lighting, Cohen invented Lionel’s first train, the Electric Express, shortly afterwards. Originally, this train was not intended to be sold to the general public. It was positioned as a storefront display to help market other merchandise. No sooner than the display was set up, members of the public began inquiring about purchasing the Electric Express train. This initial demand prompted Lionel to develop trains that would become an iconic brand.

Interestingly, it was Cohen’s marketing skills, not his talent for innovation, that made him a fortune. For instance, in the 1920s, Cohen promoted the tradition of linking toy model trains with Christmas displays; he persuaded department store owners to set up elaborate displays to help drive demand for trains especially as Christmas gifts. Cohen also decided to paint the Lionel trains in bright colors so it would attract more women purchasing these products for their children.

At its height in the 1950s, Lionel rose to become the largest American toy train manufacturer, outselling its closest competitor, American Flyer, and generating well over $25 million in sales per year. However, the company began to decline after 1956 as children began to prefer toy cars and airplanes instead of these trains. By 1959, Cohen sold off his entire stake in the company to Roy Cohn and retired.
After Cohen retired, the company continued a steady decline, including several changes in ownership. In 1969 the company was sold off to General Mills after struggling with bankruptcy. By 1986 the company had been sold yet again to collector, Richard Kughn. Kughn then sold the company to Wellspring Associates Consortium in 1995.

Many Lionel train enthusiasts and aficionados consider 1959 to be the end of the true Lionel train. It is no coincidence that this year also marks the end of Cohen’s tenure and involvement with the company and its products. Even if the current company is a mere shadow of its former glory, Cohen’s story of how he built the company and this iconic brand will continue to endure as an inspiration to many generations of entrepreneurs.

Model trains do not simply run on a landscape which is empty; it needs to have a geographical setting also known as scenery. The model train scenery is a very important part of the layout of the railroad. The geographical terrain and the period of time can have a dramatic impact on the display and overall presentation.

Typically, the model train scenery is made in such a way as to reflect the locality which one has opted for and realistically match the desired theme. For instance, a logging model train ought to operate on a mountainous area which is also rugged and has a plenty of trees or a lumber yard; it shouldn’t be displayed in an agricultural area with numerous farms and pastures. As you can imagine, the model train scenery should complement the purpose of the train.

The model train scale also helps determines the type of scene that will appear along the train tracks. For instance, if the desired scenery is an urban scene with different parks, playgrounds and neighborhoods, then one must make sure the proper accessories are available for the specific model train scale that will be displayed. It would look odd if the model train was proportionally larger or smaller than the buildings and other objects displayed. While this tends to increase complexity of the scene, including such details will certainly be more appealing to look at.

Another interesting use of scenery is to create depth. The model train scenery can be constructed in such a way as to appear larger if different sizes and pieces have been included in the scenery. The use of smaller buildings and trees in the background while simultaneously placing larger buildings and trees near the foreground creates an illusion of depth. Clearly, the creation of this type of scenery adds a level of sophistication and customization to further differentiate one’s scenery.

Besides depth, some model train hobbyists increase the realism of their scenery through the use of photographs, lighting, and real world material. Photographs of scenery can be blown up and displayed as a background setting. In addition, the scenery can be further enhanced by lighting to create the illusion of sunset or evening. Finally, an enthusiast can go one step further by using actual small shrubs, bushes, and rocks to provide even more authenticity.

Building model train scenery requires careful thought and planning. However, with so many choices for accessories and details available, the hobbyist has no limit on what could be created. For this reason alone, some model train enthusiasts find the intricate construction of the landscape and scenery to be the most enjoyable aspect of this hobby. The most important thing is to have fun and make sure that scenery makes sense regardless if it has been completely custom-made or built through pre-fabricated parts commercially available.

Bachmann model trains have an interesting history. One would be surprised to learn that Bachmann Industries did not start manufacturing products for the model train industry. We can trace its humble origins back to Henry Carlisle, a German immigrant, who founded the company in 1833. At the time, Carlisle’s company concentrated on hair combs, umbrella handles, and cane handles made from tortoise shells and ivory. A great part of this business focused the high-back Spanish comb manufacturer for American aristocrats from the Southern states such as Louisiana. Then in 1899, this business merged with a competing company run by Henry G. Bachmann and his son Walter J. Bachmann. The new company became known as Bachmann Brothers.

Bachmann Industries actually did not enter the model train business until 114 years after the company was formed. Shortly after the turn of the twentieth century, the company began manufacturing optical frames and sunglasses. In fact, Bachmann Brothers became the first American manufacturer of sunglasses which became popular with US Army and US Air Force personnel during World War II.

After World War II ended, the company created products under the brand, Plasticville USA. At the time, this product was a do-it-yourself kit of buildings and structures designed to enhance the model train layout. These products quickly emerged as accessories for the most popular electric trains during this time, Lionel and American Flyer. Even to this day, the Plasticville products are traditional favorites for model train collectors around the world.

Bachmann did not create its first model train until 1968 when the company introduced its N scale model train products. Then, two years later, the company expanded its product line entering the HO trains market. Since then, Bachmann model trains have become one of the most appealing and are available in different types to meet the needs of consumers. These trains are also among the most popular and attractive models that hobbyists prefer to collect. These kinds of model trains give people the chance of buying both new and antique collectibles.

For many years, Bachmann trains have been among the top selling trains as far as quality and volume is concerned. These trains have increased in popularity because of their affordability, high-quality, complete accessory lines, details, building structures, and add-ons in the market. On top of their fine qualities, these model trains are expansive enough to fit in limited spaces. Bachmann model trains are also available in the popular HO and O scale, which are common model train scales at all levels of experience.

Today, Bachmann Industries is actually a Chinese-owned company that specializes in model railroading products. Its parent company, Kader Group, originally purchased the company in 1981 and has grown the Bachmann brand to become the largest volume seller of model trains. In addition, the company creates products for all popular model train scales except the z scale model train. Looking back, it is amazing to see how the Bachmann model train emerged from a company whose original business was in a completely different industry. This would surely be an interesting topic of discussion with other model train enthusiasts.

Those new to model trains might think that a model train scale is to measure weight. Instead, scales are used for depicting the proper ratio between model trains and the real world trains. In other words, imagine placing a model train next to its life-size counterpart. The two trains are exactly alike even though each is a different size and scale.

Model trains are available in various scales or sizes from very small model trains to the larger variety of garden model trains. Although ‘gauge’ is the description that was originally given to the sizes of model trains, the present accepted term is ‘scale’. Deciding which specific model train scales is appropriate depends upon one’s personal preference, budget and experience.

Different scales can be considered an intricate component of model trains. The purpose that is served by these scales is very meaningful especially in telling hobbyists a specific model train’s ratio as well as the specific model’s size. Understanding these different sizes is important because it helps in determining the size of the setup. In case the available space for the setup is limited, it is ideal to opt for a smaller model train scale, but if the space is adequate, a larger model train scale is an appropriate option.

There are a number of model train scale variations, but there are at least five that can be considered most common and easily found. HO is the most widespread model train scale; this scale is 1:87 of the real or original train. In addition, this scale model is one of the easiest to accessorize or find due to its prevalent use by many hobbyists.

Second in popularity is the N scale model train. This model train is approximately 1:160. The N symbol stands for 9 millimeters which is the distance between the tracks’ inside rails. N scale model trains are smaller and slightly more complex to accessorize in comparison to the HO scale. However, its smaller size is advantageous because less physical space is used for creating a full layout. The other model train scales, which are moderately popular include the O scale (1:48), the G scale (1:24) and the Z scale (1:220).

In order to come up with an appropriate decision regarding the model size, it is advisable that the actual building process be taken into consideration. For instance, a hobbyist with poor eyesight would not find the Z scale ideal. Similarly, a person that suffers from arthritis will find it challenging to work with a smaller model train scale. Although the use of a large scale that requires less detail is the most favorable and ideal choice, there are train hobbyists who enjoy challenges and prefer taking time with the intricacies of a smaller scale.

Another tip when choosing a particular model train scale is to consider the features and additions that should be used to compliment the model train. Some model train enthusiasts enjoy working with detailed accessories even more than the locomotive, rolling stock, and railroad tracks. The reality is that not all model scales have the same variety of accessories. So, it pays to plan ahead and pick the right scale according to one’s vision and goals for the overall model train layout.

Any model train layout can only be considered interesting in appearance if the suitable model train track is available and is compatible with it. Purchasing a suitable model train track is largely dependent on the desired train in question and its intended purpose. There were limited options initially, but the options that are currently available can be considered virtually limitless. Before a model train track can be purchased, it is important to have adequate information.

There are four materials that are commonly used for model train tracks—nickel silver, steel, zinc-coated steel, and brass. Brass is a good conductor of electricity, but the cleaning and care it requires is more tedious and laborious than the other materials by far. For instance, brass train tracks form an oxide that is not a good conductor of electricity; this means one must frequently run a cleaning car over the tracks or manual clean the rails. As for the zinc-coated steel material, the steel becomes exposed and tends to rust after the zinc coating wears off. Nickel coating, on the other hand, combines the conductivity of brass with resistance to corrosion and rust. Although nickel silver is more expensive than the other materials, most hobbyists feel the improved reliability and low maintenance of nickel silver justifies the higher price.

There are several important rules that should be remembered when laying a track. To begin with, tightening the track’s curve requires smaller rolling stock proportionally. In the case of sectional tracks, a rail joiner, which is a slotted clip, is used for connecting the pieces that provide both physical and electrical connections. However, the fit needs to be firmly fastened or else the train’s constant movement over time increases the probability of loosening the tracks. This, in turn, could lead to a break in the electrical circuit or even train derailment.

The flexible model train track has become the standard type of track that is most common on current model train layouts. This type of track piece is produced by most model train track manufacturers. A majority of brands can be considered fairly rigid, even though they are bendable. In other words, once flexible tracks are formed to the desired shape, they have the ability maintain the shape. A flexible model train track has numerous advantages: the overall layout requires fewer joints; one can curve the track to the desired radius allowing the model train to ease into the curves gently rather than going straight into them abruptly.

Building, operating and maintaining model railroads is considered by most individuals as a hobby that they enjoy continuously. When the model train ceases to run smoothly, the train track is the likely culprit accumulating dirt and grime. Even though the model train track’s maintenance may not appear significant, it is essential to take time and remove the build up dirt to ensure that the track is kept operational and at its peak potential. For this reason, the model train track should not be taken lightly. It is best to choose wisely and take time before laying down the tracks. By doing so, it will save a model train enthusiast from wasting time and money later on.

According to some model train hobbyists, the G scale train models are the best train size for both new and experienced train lovers. The biggest G scale does not automatically mean that it is the best scale among other trains, but this might just be the case with the G scale trains. The G stands for garden and such models have a ratio of 1:24 and sometimes 1.22.5 making it great for outdoor enjoyment. These trains run on one gauge track and are sights to behold owing to their heavy appearances and strength.

The most notable aspect about these model types are that model train enthusiasts can utilize landscape such as miniature shrubs, plants and bushes to improve the overall model train layout. In fact, a garden train using the 1:24 scale was erected at the Fairplex Gardens in Los Angeles is one example of using the surrounding scenery. Today, the Fairplex Garden railroad showcases 9,800 feet of railway track and eighteen miles of electrical wiring.

The early garden trains that were manufactured in Europe had a scale of 1:24. However, these versions did not reach America until the early 1920s. The real G scale trains, which are also called garden railways, were initially sold in 1968 by Ernst Paul Lehmann Petentwerk under the Lehmann Gross Bahn (LGB) brand. Later on, the company introduced the G scale trains in Europe and America such as the diesel prototypes, steam, electric, accessories and rolling stocks. Despite LGB’s pioneering production efforts, the company could not establish its presence in America until 1972 when it received publicity in an article published in “Model Railroader Magazine”.

Due to their uniqueness, these trains merit several considerations. First, the G scale model trains are easy to set up because their tracks are easier to handle and are larger compared to other model train scales. However, their sizes utilize more physical space. If G scale hobbyists intend to have permanent indoor settings, it is advisable for them to plan their needs carefully.

Another consideration worth mentioning is the fact that G scale model trains provide a perfect opportunity for the family to come together and have a good time. For instance, even young children can participate in setting up a layout for the G scale models. For instance, these kinds of model trains are perfect for personalizing the layout by including children toys such as cars and other items due to the larger scale. In addition, parents can have their children help them to make additional items such as by taking empty cans and cleaning them up and utilizing them for water towers. Similarly, the children can help by create buildings by decorating boxes of various shapes and sizes.

In summary, the G scale model trains are ideal for outdoor use and blends well with landscaping or garden settings. This particular point enables model train enthusiasts the opportunity to set up an elaborate, realistic layout that can be admired outdoors. So, the next time someone asks you about a G scale model train, be sure to share your newfound knowledge. They may even be so impressed that they’ll want to start their own G scale model train layout!

It is very common to notice model trains rolling around their railroad on display when attending hobby shops, science exhibitions, showcases and country fairs. However, the most popular and captivating of all the trains is an N scale model train. N scale model trains refer to a track scale railroad system of between 1:148 to 1:160 and 9 mm. However, this may slightly vary in several countries depending on the manufacturers of the trains. Regardless, the one factor that should be consistent is the train’s 9 mm gauge.

Although accessories and trains of similar scale have existed since 1927, the various N scale train manufacturers at the time were competing among one another. The development of true standards did not emerge until the first N scale trains were commercially produced around 1962 by K. Arnold & Company of Nürnberg. Within two years after commercial availability, the N scale manufacturers defined the standards for gauge, height, voltage, and various forms of couplers.

The manufacturers have maintained a realistic appearance unique to these trains that the demand and popularity of N Scale model trains grew rapidly. Train hobbyists including children of different ages, the young, and the old have swamped the manufacturers with demand for the best market price and quality of the model train. Though the N scale train is smaller as compared to the HO trains, it offers an enormous thrill with the range of train collections, variety of building construction and accessories, as well as options to create a large or small model train layout. In fact, N scale trains also require minimal space in the yard and living room due to its small size.

Some of the most popular N scale train suppliers are Lionel, Marklin, Walthers and Athern. There are even manufacturers such as America Flyer, Atlas O and MTH who have introduced a ready-to-run model train kit ideal for beginners. This type of kit was easy to assemble and understand. In contrast, other kits such as the one from Craftsman were meant for the skilled model train hobbyist. Specifically designed and cut prefabricated plywood parts were built from scratch and made available by layout prints, tools and layout.

When buying a ready-to-run kit the prices will vary from US$80 to US$500. Moreover, because of its popular size, it is quite easy to obtain a wide range of buildings, boxcars, and locomotives to increase the model train display. In part, the popularity and wide variety of accessories make the N scale model train less expensive compared to other larger model train scales.

Both adults and children have been charmed by these model trains all over the world. Many people, including model train hobbyists, cannot help but admire how these trains can accurately negotiate the railway curves and turns with precision. Moreover, the popularity of the N gauge model train has also made it possible for fans to build their own sceneries and layouts without any limits or boundaries to their imagination. The N scale train is truly a model for all ages, providing continuous hours of entertainment for everyone.
